The water streams of the park
The “Parco dei Monti Rognosi e della Valle del Sovara” is characterized by a particular water reserve and it exhibits many interesting environments linked to the presence of this water, both historically and naturalistically. The main character is without any doubt the Sovara, a stream whose springs are found in the nearby Alpe di Catenaia, with the help of its tributary Cerfone. For ages, this stream has made the activities of man possible, being useful in the process of extracting metals. It is also a great element for biodiversity, since its bed can ease the growth of plants which require a great humidity and being its water always clear, even during rainy months, it is a good environment for rare animals such as white-clawed crayfishes and gobies. The river, downstream from the park, is blocked by a small dam which originates a small artificial lake of around 25.000 m2. Another small water basin is the Laghetto delle Pescaie, unique example of a humid ophiolitic zone over which nature prevailed, a refuge for birds and other animals. Water can also have beneficial properties, as proved by the Fonte dell’Acqua Cetra, a spring commonly used because of its sulphurous water. Following the paths across the Park one can run into fords and watersheds, accurately preserved without upsetting the natural course of the water.
