The fauna of Monti Rognosi
The particular nature of Monti Rognosi is responsible for the presence of many interesting animal species, which found their home in the peculiar flora of the area. Many animals roam the park, especially the ones which love open spaces. In those areas in which trees are not so thick one could easily spot many birds of prey hunting snakes or small rodents, such as the short-toed snake eagle and the buzzard, with their great wings, the smaller hobby, recognizable by its scythe-shaped wings, and the kestrel, unique in its capability of staying stationary while flying. The red juniper is a suitable shelter for smaller birds, such as the subalpine warbler and the Sardinian warbler, with their unique singing, and nocturnal birds, as the nightjar, easily spotted at night when it’s hunting. A sound easily heard in the park is the pecking on the wood produced by the woodpecker while looking for small insects under the bark of the trees. The easily heated rocks are a good house for some reptiles, such as the green lizard and the three-toad skink. Of course, it is possible to find bigger animals such as boars or roe deers, whose presence attracted many wolves to the area. Many animals populate the streams of Sovara and Cerfone, thanks to their crystal-clear water. One can easily find trouts, white-clawed crayfishes and gobies. It is also possible to see two amphibian which currently lives only in Italy: the spectacled salamander and the Italian stream frog.
