Following St. Francis' footsteps

Francis of Assisi, on his trail towards La Verna, used to stop in the Castello di Montauto, accommodated by his long-term friend Albert. During these stops, maybe aware of his incoming death, Francis left his sackcloth, mended with scotch broom’s stems, to his friend as a recollection of him. The sackcloth is nowadays preserved in the monastery of La Verna, but not far from Montauto a small shrine is still visible to remind people that St. Francis walked there. This activity will bring you around to visit the places St. Francis saw in his pilgrimage, allowing you to enjoy the nature in a respectful way, in line with St. Francis’ thought. How it is done: hike (easy). What do you need: sport equipment suitable for the season. Aim: knowledge of the territory, knowledge of history and traditions linked to the “legend of the sackcloth”, a new approach to nature through a hike which will push you towards a reflection on the relationship between man and nature nowadays, without ignoring St. Francis’ teachings.

Price for half-a-day: 120 € (roughly 90 £ or 135 US$)
